The top pankratiasts in the midwest came together to compete in the WPF/USAPF Midwest Championships on October 27 at Bob Schirmer's All American Academy in Cicero, Illinois. The first championship tournament held under the WPF's new International Rules, and officiated by former pankration champion Duane Hamacher and lifelong MMA/ NHB competitor and trainer Bob Schirmer, the tournament went very smoothly - to the pleasure of competitors, coaches, spectators and WPF president Craig Smith, who was in attendance. "The new International Rules take the matches out of the hands of the referees and gives them back to the competitors, where they belong," said Smith. "Additionally, our new requirement that referees must be, or have been, full contact fighters - and preferably MMA fighters, assures that pankratiasts are now judged by others with personal experience in that which they are judging. It makes all the difference, and I think our pankratiasts deserve it." |
